«Table for One» was photographed in Rome in May 2026. A café table in full sun: a finished cup, a spoon, a pair of sunglasses standing on their own, an ashtray pushed to the corner. Everything around the table has gone black.

This is probably the most direct picture I have of what my practice is about. Objects left behind. Shadows doing as much work as the things casting them. A person present in the frame precisely through their absence — through the traces they leave when they get up and go.

The image belongs to life, as found — my ongoing line of attention towards objects left or placed somewhere, in arrangements nobody composed for a viewer. Here the arrangement happens to be perfect: the sunglasses stand upright and throw a long blade of shadow across the table, the spoon catches a point of light against the wall of the cup, the ashtray sits exactly where somebody pushed it aside.

It also holds something simpler — my admiration for light, and for Italy in sun. Digital capture, no staging. The whole picture is one plane of lit table surrounded by dark, and the contrast between those two is the structure. For me it is the quintessence of what I look for in photography: no event, no action, and still everything that just happened is legible.

Recommended material — baryta

Why this material for this image — the picture uses both ends of the range at once: a lit table that has to read as sunlight, and a surround that has to be genuinely black. Matte paper flattens both — the table goes chalky instead of bright, and the black loses its density, so the picture stops being about light. Baryta keeps the white luminous, holds the black, and gives the spoon and the steel ashtray the small specular points they need.

Margins and framing — black frame, no mount. The image is already surrounded by its own black; letting that run to the frame keeps the table floating. A wide white mount meets the white of the table at the left edge and confuses which white is the picture and which is the paper.

Light and viewing distance — directed light, slightly warm, around 3500–4000 K. Unlike a work built on delicate colour, this one takes warm light well: it is a photograph about sun, and warm light reinforces it. Give it enough intensity — in a dim room the picture loses the thing it is about. Reads from three metres.

Type of space — light or dark walls both work. Kitchens, dining rooms, cafés and restaurants are the obvious homes, but the picture is structured enough for a living room or an office.

Avoid — dim ambient light, cool-toned lighting.
